LAKE SEBU 7 FALLS & ZIPLINE

You knew that you arrived in Lake Sebu when you are greeted with this arc. Rudilin wouldn’t want to miss this spot and instructed the driver for a quick stop. Photo by Phos Graphi (@phos_graphi)

Lake Sebu is known for its majestic waterfalls located in the highlands of South Cotabato. Lake Sebu offers visitors and tourist alike a relaxing ambiance, a calm lake, foggy mountains and forest and most of all cool climate. Its is dubbed as the “Summer Capital of Southern Mindanao.” Majority of visitors and tourist go to Lake Sebu to see the Seven (7) Waterfalls located in Brgy. Siloton. A photo op with this marker is always a good idea when visiting the place. Photo by Nonie Isaac (@nonie_isaac).

Basically it is composed of 7 majestic waterfalls with waters coming from Lake Siloton and Lake Sebu. Here are the seven waterfalls of Lake Sebu with T’boli names: Hikong Alo (passage falls), Hikong Bente (immeasurable falls), Hikong B’Lebel (zigzag falls), Hikong Lowig (booth falls), Hikong K’Fo-I (wildflower falls), Hikong Ukol (short falls), Hikong Tonok (soil falls). Travel blogger James Arthur Ambayic Adalim travel wouldn’t be complete without having a photo op with these waterfalls. Photo by @asanasadsijames

Did you know that Lake Sebu’s Seven Falls Eco-Tourism Project Zipline is one of the highest in South East Asia at 180 meters (600 ft.) high. The zipline has two legs, first is the longest at 740 meters (around 40 seconds travel) and the 2nd is 420 meters (around 20 seconds travel). You can either go solo or duo with their zipline. While at 600 ft high you can will experience a spectacular view and you will be flying above the 4 of the 7 falls mentioned above with forest and rainbows.

LAKE SEBU BOAT RIDE/CRUISE

A wonderful shot from Camille Morales (@moresaaay) over Lake Sebu water lotus and the Owong cruising.

Want to witness the way of life of T’boli natives as they go around on their daily routine and chores on board an Owong, a traditional canoe which is the main mode of transportation inter-island? One will be greeted with a field of water lotus flowers. Joel (@joel_the_lakwatsero) on board an Owong now ready to cruise over Lake Sebu for a closer look on water lotus field.

Take that 30 minute boat cruise around the lake with fantastic view of the six islands and islets in Punta Isla Lake Resort for a minimal price. That boat cruise over lunch at Punta Isla Lake Resort. Photo by Princess Aguilar (@printetzharmin).

During your meal visitors are entertained with various dances & sounds of the T’boli while cruising the placid lake. One can also charter an Owong and have a picturesque pictorial on the lake while on board. Jeanete a young local beader from Lake Sebu is ready for action for this pictorial on board the Owong. LANG DULAY MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN CENTER

A photo of Lang Dulay taken early in the morning during their visit. Photo by Rocel Dantos.

Lang S. Dulay is a renowned dreamweaver. She was awarded by the NCCA as the National Living Treasure Awardee in T’nalak weaving in 1998. She begin weaving at the age of 12 and through the years has developed her skills in producing sought after T’nalak weaving patterns and design. It was believe that Lang Dulay dreamt of the said patterns and she brought it to life through her designs.

T’nalak is a cloth made of naturally colored abaca fiber. Its intricate designs are interpretation of dreams, weaved to life by Lang Dulay and now being preserved and pass to her younger protégés to the T’boli women originally produced in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

That is why they are called “Dreamweavers.” The Manlilikha ng Bayad Center was opened to focus on the preservation of the art of T’boli textile weaving. Here are some of the patters:

LAKE HOLON & MT. MELIBINGOY

This amazing view from the summit of Mt. Melibingoy (1280.16 MASL). The majestic Lake Holon in the middle surrounded by 15 mountains representing the 15 Guardians of the Lake. Photo by Edoo Cose Jr.

A scenic trek through Mt. Melibingoy (Mt. Parker) to Lake Holon is a must try activity for adventure and nature loving travelers, mountaineers, trekkers and campers. Lake Holon (Lake Maughan) is recognize as one of the Philippines cleanest inland body of water and thus its the T’bolis “Crown Jewel of the South”.

Lake Holon is accessible through two(2) trails – Salacafe and Kuli trails respectively. Salacafe Trail is the easier trail which only takes 3-4 hours to the lake while the Kule trail however is more difficult and takes 5-6 hours to the lake. For adventure lovers a traverse trek is advisable. Majority of the trail or around 80% consist of straightforward assault. For me I would personally recommend to take the Kule trail as starting point and end it via Salacafe trail. Kule trail by the way offers 360-degree view of the entirety of Lake Holon. Please note that if you decide to take the Kule Trail you are required to be there at the jump-off before 12nn since you are not allowed to hike via Kule beyond lunch. Buy necessary food supplies in the town before proceeding to there. You can reach Kule via a habal-habal (motorbike) ride for roughly 1-1:15 hour ride passing through different plantation of fruits and crops plus scenic view. “Ang Tagasundo” as DJ Gatchalian said. This is pursuant to policy, guidelines and good practices of LGU of T’boli, Lake Holon as the 100th tourist destination deserves a break from receiving visitors, this is to allow nature to reciprocate and restore its natural wonders and opportunity for routine repair and maintenance and upgrading of staff skills. It will only be open during the Pilgrimage event.(L-R) Scenic view of Lake Holon with the Mountain Guardians; A reflection of the mountain and clouds in the Lake; An “Owong” ready to transport passengers over the lake; Groupie with Rudilin and Phos.

BOB NOWONGBob Nowong is undoubtedly the most popular restaurant in Lake Sebu. Located in Purok Rosas and just a few minute ride from Lake Sebu landmark. This unique restaurant showcases a collection of Lake Sebu historical past and other antic collection of the owner. This restaurant is also unique since its the only Lake Sebu dining destination but not on a resort setting. “Bob” in Tboli means pond and “Nowong” is from the word “Owong” which means traditional Tboli boat. The two-storey restaurant has a billiard/dart and recreation area in the first floor, a garden area for dinning and the 2nd floor which the main counter is present. I for sure was amazed with its classy ambiance inside and who would have taught that there’s this kind of restaurant in the area, expensive looking but the price is reasonable. During our lunch they prepared BN Signature Steamed Chicken in Ginger Sauce, Vegetable Ukoy, Pork Sinigang, BN Lechon Kawali, BN Singaporean & Garlic Shrimp, Pork Sisig, Chopsuey and Fried Rice with cheese sticks as appetiser while waiting for the food.

The servings are very generous, I would say good for 3-4 persons sharing. Sumptuous food, good customer service, beautiful view and cozy ambiance which makes Bob Nowong a must visit restaurant in the area.Check out Bob Nowong Lake Sebu on facebook and website: http://www.bobnowong.com. For reservations contact them at mobile no. +63936-266-1076. Bob Nowong is located in Purok Rosas, Barangay Poblacion, 9512 Lake Sebu.

Dubbed as the Small Boracay of the South with its white powdery soft sand beach, turquoise waters and very little to none cottages and nipa huts. This six kilometers stretch of white powdery sand is the home of Sarbay Festival celebrated every May. Slowly Gumasa Beach has multiple resorts opened for public. The only way to enter the famous beach is through passing the resorts fronting it.

*Isla Jardin Del Mar

Isla Jardin Del Mar Resort is the most popular beach resort in Gumasa Glan, Sarangani. It is a 1.5 to 2 hours ride from General Santos City. We arrived here at the resort around 1:30 p.m. where we had our lunch immediately.

Ably assisted by the most hospitable Mr. Droy Yuzon Alcaya of the Provincial Government of Sarangani.

*Glan Ancestral House

Temporarily forget about those white sand beaches, lets take you to the past and rich history of Glan by visiting its ancestral houses some of which are 100 years

Emilio Alegado Colonial House is the most photographed houses in Glan. ccto: Rawe June

Emelio A. Alegado Ancestral House was constructed in 1949 by Mr. Alegado himself after the Japanese-American occupation with both Spanish and American architectural influences. Mr. E.A. Alegado was then the first Municipal Mayor of Glan. Take a short visit in his home and you will be fascinated by the intricate calado embroidered walls in the inside and antique collections of the family.

Glan’s historical value makes this town the most interesting place to discover in Sarangani Province aside from its famous white sand beaches.

DIY: Sorsogon + Albay Backpacking

Where is Sorsogon? How far it is from Manila?

Sorsogon is the “Gateway to Southern Philippines”. Located at the southernmost tip of Luzon and is subdivided into fourteen municipalities (towns) and one city. It is part of Region V comprises Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Masbate, commonly known as the Bicolandia. It is found at the tip of the Bicol Peninsula and faces the island of Samar.

Sorsogon City (formerly Sorsogon and Bacon) is the capital of the province. Formed by merging two municipalities to one and now a city. Go #Soarsogon!

Top Attractions to do in Sorsogon:

1. St. Peter and Paul Cathedral

Undeniably the most noticeable structure in the whole of Sorosogon City. It has a huge dome ala-Vatican that dominates the city’s skyline. The new church was inaugurated on April 27, 2011 during the 60th year of the Diocese of Sorsogon.

2. Sorsogon Provincial Capitol

This roman gothic inspired building is the Provincial Capitol of Sorsogon. It has the largest Capitol park in the Philippines located in front of it and a Sorsogon Museum on its side.

3. Mt. Pulog

Rising at 1020 MASL. Beautifully lush and forested, ensconced in the mountain ranges of Sorsogon facing the Pacific. Mt. Pulog in the municipality of Bacon is one of Bicol’s best-kept hiking secrets.

Major Jump off: Brgy. Sta. Cruz, Bacon

Alternate Jump off: Brgy. San Juan, Bacon

Specs: Minor climb, Difficulty 4/9, Trail Class 1-3, Hours to Summit 3-4 hrs.

4. Paguriran Island and Lagoon

Paguriran is not your typical island that you have to chartered a boat to reach it. Upon our arrival we are greeted with this view. The island is connected with a vanishing white sandbar from the main shoreline. You can reach the island by 5-10mins walk. During high tide you need to swim to reach the island. Entrance Fee: P20 per person. Parking Fee: P30.

Paguriran Lagoon is found in the middle of this little island. One can swim to its clear emerald waters.

Or you can climb the rock in the middle of the island and have a 360 degree view of Paguriran and the beach.

5. Prieto Diaz

Prieto Diaz was one of Sorsogon’s first town when the latter become a province. The town Prieto Diaz was named after two Bicolano martyrs – Fr. Gabriel Prieto and Fr. Severino Diaz, two of the 13 martyrs who were instrumental during the Philippine revolution in the Bicol Region.

The town is now an ecological sanctuary. SeaManCor (Seagrass, Mangrove, Corals) cooperative is in charge in developing the 500 hectares mangrove forest. The shoreline forest is home to not just different varieties of mangrove trees and sea grass, but also to birds, mollusks, crustaceans and fishes.

Taken at Sabang Beach. The town offers guided tours with lunch. The breakwater near the Pacific Ocean is a sight to behold turning into a sandbar during low tide. How about lunch in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? It’s possible in Prieto Diaz. 👍🏼.

6. Gubat Surf’s up! Our mandatory pose. Gubat is home of the famous Buenavista Beach where surfing is at hype during the months of September to March when the waves are big. Since it’s facing the Pacific formed waves are big enough making it perfect for surfing aficionados and alike. Surf with the locals, feel the beach vibe, watch the beautiful sunset and stargazing during evening.

I’m ready. Let’s surf. 🏄🏽

7. BarcelonaBarcelona! We are not talking about Barcelona Spain but still BS – Barcelona Sorsogon. 😜 Barcelona Sorsogon! Europe can wait, let’s explore the Philippines first before anywhere else in the world. This site is perfect for photo op with the Pacific Ocean as the background.

The Barcelona Ruins Park located across the Barcelona Church. The St. Joseph Church or commonly known as Barcelona Church was built in 1874 by then Governadorcillo Juan Evasco made of coral rocks.

We love the Philippines. We love Barcelona.. 😁

8. Bulusan The welcome arc of Bulusan Volcano Natural Park. Photo Credit: Mervin Marasigan.
Mo
Bulusan Volcano Natural Park is a 3,673 hectare protected rainforest area surrounding Mt. Bulusan. It is the highest peak in Sorsogon rises to 1565 MASL and is one of the active Volcano in the Philippines. The park has a lake, two other mountains – Sharp Peak and Hormahan, Lake Aguingay and the active Bulusan Volcano.

Activities like kayak for P100 for 30 mins is not bad, also there’s boat paddling and canoeing. Guided trek can be done as well to visit the volcanos crater. No guide no trek policy. Entrance Fee is P10 per person and parking is P30 per vehicle.

9. Irosin Irosin is the only land lock municipality in Sorsogon. And it’s famous for its hot and cold springs. Among the tourist and local favorite is Mateo Hot and Cold Springs Resort because you can experience both springs under one roof. Due to its proximity located at the foot of Mt. Bulusan, one of the most active volcanoes in the country and is blessed with abundant flow of natural springs. The hot and cold springs at Irosin also flow from the lush mountain in the national park.

10. Matnog

You are now leaving the island of of Luzon? Says nobody. Not yet .. I have to explore Matnog Subic Beach first.

Matnog lies at the southernmost tip of the Bicol Peninsula of Luzon Island. It is dubbed as the “Gatewat to the Visayas”. You can cross Samar for less than 3 hours via RoRo vessel. Matnog is known for its white and pinkish beach, the famous Subic Beach in Calintaan Island, Matnog.

When the evening comes, chilling by the beach with some cold beer and great friends is always a good idea. (Taken at 8pm with Fujifilm X-T20)

I can’t resist the clear turquoise waters of Subic Beach.

Calintaan Cave in Matnog, Sorsogon

Island hopping is not complete without dipping the waters.

Sidetrip: Albay

Upon arriving back at Matnog Port you can refresh/shower at the Tourism Office for P20 only. Look for a tricycle and instruct to send you off at Matnog Bus Terminal. Ride a bus going to Manila.

Top 2 Things to do in Albay:

1. Visit Cagsawa Ruins Remember that very popular postcard you saw with Mayon Volcano view? This is the site where it was taken. From postcard to

reality.

The Divine Mercy statue is the first to greet the visitors who want to see the entire Cagsawa Ruins Park. Erected last March 9, 2007. It was donated by a group

who attended the 2nd National, 4th Luzon-wide, 1st Bicol Divine Mercy Convention.

The Cagsawa Ruins is the most visited tourist attractions in Albay. It is located in Brgy. Busay, Cagsawa Municipality of Daraga. Entrance fee: P10.00 only.

2. Go on an ATV Adventure A more thrilling way to enjoy Mayon is by riding an ATV up its slopes! Cagsawa is one of the jump-off points for ATV adventures to Mayon. ATV rides are provided by Mayon Skydrive, Mayon ATV Tour and Bicol Adventure ATV. Rates differ depending on what trail you want to choose. Ranges from P799 – P1,800.

I Love Mayon 👍🏼

We choose the black lava trail with Helipad which is the highlight.

Passing thru a flowing waters with our ATV.

Standing on top of the Black Lava Wall. Behind us is the ground level. Looking it from below it is somewhat 40-50 feet high. This was brought by Mayon’s 2006 eruption. I can’t just imagine how terrifying this was as the hot lava inched forward to the village ground during the volcano’s eruption.

Beyond this point from where we stand are just dark sharp lava rocks stretching as far as the eye can see, at the foot to the top of the volcano. Careful the boulders are not on a stable condition

A helipad! Our guide told us that this is being used as a base point for rescue missions to the volcano.

The latter, is known for its pristine white beaches, sandbars and rock formations, Burias Island is the next big tourist destination in the province of Masbate. Balabac – The Jewel of South Palawan

Heard about Balabac? Where exactly it is? Well, I’ll take you there.

The Philippine archipelago comprises about 7,641 islands of which Balabac is just one of them. BALABAC is located in the Southernmost tip of Palawan. It is the 5th largest island of Palawan and 30th Largest Island in the Philippines. Situated in the rich waters of Sulu Sea, some 50 kilometers north from Sabah, Malaysia across the Balabac Strait. Balabac is a second class municipality in the province of Palawan. It is a group of 31 islands and islets blessed with unspoiled fine sandy white and pink beaches, endemic flora and fauna and rich marine life. Where perfectly turquoise & emerald seawater can be seen by our naked eyes and virgin island beaches will left you open mouthed. It is the home of the Philippine mouse-deer, also kwown as the Balabac Chevrotain or Pilandok – a small, nocturnal ruminant, which is already endemic.

To be honest, I have been to many beaches in the Philippines and out of the country, but this place is truly breathtaking. You’ll caught yourself counting the word ‘WOW” during your visit. Welcome to Balabac Group of Islands.

How to Get Here:

By Land and Sea

Rio Tuba in the town of Bataraza is the gateway to Balabac Islands. A public boat departs daily at between 10AM-12NN from Rio Tuba Port to mainland Balabac, travel time is approximately four (4) hours depending on sea condition and fare is P350-450 one-way. Take note that there is no fix schedule of boat departure as it depends on sea condition and passenger traffic. It is best to be there as early as 7AM to secure your slot. Alternately there’s only one public boat departs daily from mainland Balabac to Rio Tuba at 6AM.

Rio Tuba is accessible by land from Puerto Princesa City. Buses and vans regularly depart from San Jose Terminal of Puerto Princesa to Rio Tuba starting at 4AM up to 9PM daily. Fare is for as low as P275 for non-aircon bus and as high as P450 for aircon van or bus, travel time is approximately five (5) to six (6) hours. If you are a group of 10 or more its better to charter a van going to Rio Tuba and depart anytime. Travel time will be lessen by approximately an hour.

• There are lodging/pension houses in Rio Tuba where you can spend the night. White Heaven Lodge near Rio Tuba bus terminal has P250/night for a very basic fan room with common CR. Other lodges in town are Triple J Inn, RZ Lodge, Pring Pension House and Dolotte Lodge. Expect only basic accommodation from these lodges. Price ranges: P300-500/night.

• Basic mobile signal of major networks are present in Poblacion Balabac and other parts of Bugsuk Island and Onuk Island. Other islands are slow to none. Signal is not enough for web browsing.

• There is No ATM in Balabac and no establishment accepts credit card, debit card. The nearest ATM is in the town of Rio Tuba in mainland Palawan, thus better to bring extra cash with you. Withdraw in Puerto Princesa in case the ATM in Rio Tuba is offline.

• Electricity in Poblacion Balabac and neighboring towns runs only from 2PM to 6AM the following day (updated August 2017). No electricity in the outlying islands. Inform your boatman ahead to buy extra gas for the generator set in some islands if you opt to stay overnight.

• Bring extra insect repellant for protection against mosquitoes and sand flies (niknik). Wear long sleeves, leggings and socks for protection.

• Buy extra water and snacks/foods; bring extra sunblock and rashguard; flashlights and headlamp; extra powerbanks; snorkel/diving gears; personal medicines/first aid kit and garbage bag for waterproofing of things and garbage segregation. Practice LNT.

• Best time to visit is during November – June. Full moon schedule. Other months considerable for as long as weather is good.

  • Most of merchandise/products sold in the mainland are from Malaysia due to its proximity.
